The Mandala Home Cleanse started on May 10 and there’s another coming up in June… Follow one Mandala yogini as she embarks on her very first cleanse! Or sign up by clicking on the button on the right of this page.

5/19: I just ate my last meal on the cleanse: millet with water-sauteed veggies, and lots of ginger and garlic. It was delicious. I’ll confess I was not perfect during this cleanse. I had a couple of major transgressions as well as some minor ones. But overall, I think I learned a lot about how to eat healthier. I could see so dramatically what happened to my body, my belly, and my bowels when I slipped up and ate a piece of garlic bread at a barbecue. Things were definitely affected. And just to see that is almost valuable enough to warrant slipping up. Well, maybe not that valuable. But I did the best I could, and regardless, I feel like I gained so much. With my several pounds of quinoa and my Bragg’s Aminos in my cupboard, I am going forth into the world not with the plan to immediately dive back into old habits and celebrate that I’m not on the Cleanse anymore, but instead to carry what I’ve learned and keep applying it. And I will have an egg sandwich from Mary’s when I want one and I will drink a glass or two of wine when I want to, but it will be a mindful choice, and it won’t be the default. My foods that I cook at home will be healthy, and I think that will make the splurges all the more decadent.

Also, I am planning to keep the Dinacharya as a part of my routine. Getting up early was never an issue since I have a one year old, but so many times the morning shower has been forgone, and never was there this luxurious ritual of brushing the body down before the shower and massaging oil up and down afterwards. That is a patient and powerful way to start the day.

So thank you, Jolie. It’s been a great experience.

5/18: Tomorrow is the last day of the Cleanse, and with that I feel like I will be carrying a new set of tools into my life. Not only the tools to eat better and create healthier routines, but also the tools to deal with things better. There’s something I’ve felt on a mental level- I guess it has to do with the crowding of the mind, and that during the cleanse you not only feel your body getting rid of stuff, but your mind too. That’s why I’ve been such a space cadet for much of this week. But also, I feel like I am not getting as overwhelmed by emotions. Like when my husband and I had a near squabble, I just kind of took a depp breath and let it go because it wasn’t worth spending the time and attention on. I’d rather we just enjoy each other’s company. And I think that definitely has to do with all the letting go and all the consciousness I’ve been practicing.

5/17: This cleanse is feeling loooong. While my body is feeling good and I’m not craving things like caffeine so much any more, I am still craving the taste of an egg sandwich or a piece of fried chicken. I really value what the Cleanse has instilled in me: that I should think about the choices I am making and make them consciously. I shouldn’t have a cup of coffee in the morning because that’s what I always do. But I should have something if it’s a conscious choice. And there are some conscious choices I’d like to make off the cleanse list!!! But we’re getting there. Two more days to go.

5/15: Today was one of those blissful Saturdays, and I got to spend a lot of it in the Square eating delicious food from the Cleanse list, prepared by Renee, one of Mandala’s favorite chefs. She made a great green soup from cabbage, asparagus, leeks, and zucchini, as well as rice and lentils topped with crunchy sunflower seeds. It was absolutely delicious and utterly satisfying. My energy levels were high, and the healthy food coupled with the sunshine provided for a smooth and optimistic day 6.

5/14: Somehow my entry for yesterday didn’t go through… But basically, in the past two days, I’ve felt a whole lot better about the Cleanse. I guess it takes a little while to get through some of that gunk that has been clogging your system, and that part is not too pleasant. But now, at the end of the fifth day, I am feeling good. I’m not feeling limited by the Cleanse, but rather I feel like I’m making the choices I want to make with consciousness. Like today, I went to lunch with an old friend who had absolutely no clue about cleansing. He was choosing the place, and he chose a tavern where the ONLY thing on the cleanse list was a garden salad. BORING, especially when standing beside his crispy fish n chips. But I knew I could have gotten anything on the menu. I wasn’t going to beat myself up if I went off the cleanse list, if my body wanted something else. But when I really thought about it and really listened to my body, in that moment, the garden salad actually sounded really good. And I got it, and it was great. And not only that, but I felt great after eating it. Light and satisfied and ready to move on to more exciting things than food. And that was nice.

5/12: The third day of the cleanse is coming to an end. Tonight I went out to dinner with some friends, which was interesting. At first I thought about canceling because I knew I’d be tempted, but I really needed this dinner as I was feeling isolated all day. So I went, and I did the best I could with the menu. I was at Copa in Bridgehampton, a tapas bar, which sounds like there’s no way you could stick to a cleanse, but actually it wasn’t bad. I ate grilled asparagus and grilled mushrooms (both delicious!) and had a great meal with friends. For me it’s really important not to isolate myself from the world, and to keep connecting to others. I don’t wan the cleanse to prevent me from enjoying my life… And it was good to see that with this cleanse, I could be flexible and still work within the parameters of the cleanse.

5/11: Day 2 of the Cleanse… Earlier in the day I felt some physical pain on the left side of my belly. I laid on my back and did some twisting, and eventually it passed. Other than that, I felt a lot more comfortable today. I definitely still had ups and downs, times when I didn’t feel like this was right for me, times when I craved things from off the Cleanse list…. But I also had some moments where I felt lighter on my feet than usual, when I felt I was doing something really healthy for myself. The psychological aspect of this, the letting go of things we don’t need, is one that I think can be really powerful. Just as my body is starting to let go of the toxins that have been trapped inside for so long, I can let go of the manners of thinking and the emotions and attachments that don’t serve me.

5/10: Today is Day 1 of the Cleanse, and it’s been pretty intense. I guess I was expecting, since this is an eating cleanse, to not feel much change at all. But I definitely experienced some emotional waves. Even though there’s no deprivation to this cleanse, I felt almost rebellious against the rules imposed on my eating habits. I felt like a teenager being told not to do something, and therefore wanting to do it all the more. I drove past Citarella and stared longingly at the “Fried Chicken” sign. I walked past Mary’s aching for a cup of coffee. But when I got to Amagansett Square, where Steve Eaton was serving up his red quinoa with beet greens, I felt much better. Eating is such a deep experience when you’re conscious of it… And not eating is a scary experience.

After being inspired by Steve’s delicious concoctions, I went back to the grocery store and bought a bunch of new things. Dates, almonds, and lots more veggies supplement what I already had. I made some bliss balls from the recipe book, which were SOO easy to make and taste better than chocolate cake to me… So any time I start to feel overwhelmed by the Cleanse, I’m going to have a bliss ball (dates and almonds ground up) and remember that this cleanse is about ABUNDANCE. So as I prepare to turn in after a looong day, I think I’ve done pretty well.

Gratitude: Mother’s Day is always a reminder, for me, of how far my mom is willing to go to support me. She came to a yoga class with me on Mother’s Day even though I know it probably caused her great anxiety, and it was really special to share that experience with both her and my daughter. I am so grateful that I have the support system I do, in and out of the family.

5/4: I picked up my Cleanse Package today. One of those beautiful re-usable Mandala bags, a generous bottle of an Ayurvedic oil designed for my Vata constititution, a recipe book for the cleanse, and lots of other informational materials. I came home and made quinoa for myself and my daughter, because that’s one of the two grains that are on the list of foods allowed in the cleanse. It’s easy to make and delicious mixed with veggies and beans.

5/3: Just got through my first weekend thinking about the fact that I was about to start The Cleanse, and it made me aware of a lot of my indulgences that I’ll have to do without for a week. I am interested to see what I conclude no longer serves me and what I decide does after The Cleanse. I couldn’t resist coffee on Saturday after a particularly rough sleeping night on Friday… Wine abounded over the weekend as well. I think it’s just good to be aware of these things as I prepare to cleanse my body, just to see the kinds of changes I’ll be making and to see how they’ll serve me.

4/28: Still in the pre-cleanse phase (and still plenty of time to sign up if you haven’t!), I am just trying to get my head around giving up coffee. I go through periods when I drink coffee and phases when I don’t, but with my sleep compromised by a teething baby these days, I’ve really enjoyed my cups of coffee. So today I replaced my afternoon pick-me-up with a chai. Still caffeine, but less of it… So I’m getting myself ready.

4/26 : Since I am going to be taking part in The Home Cleanse beginning May 10, I am currently in the Pre-Cleanse phase. We just got the juicer out on the counter top and are starting to think about ingredients we’ll need for the cleanse. At the top of my list are ginger, lemons, local honey, bulk whole grains, and lots of leafy greens.
