Instructor Interviews

With Emily Weitz McLean

How were you first introduced to yoga?

  • My first yoga class was my senior year in college,  but I really started practicing the following year when I lived and traveled in Southeast Asia. I studied meditation with monks in Bangkok, and then let the deep teachings sink in on the mat as I traveled through Northern Thailand. I returned to the East End in 2004 and immediately started volunteering at Mandala in exchange for free yoga.

What made you decide to move beyond being a student to become a teacher?

  • It was very organic. I started doing Immersions with Virayoga Anusara studio in Manhattan, and before I knew it, I had 50 hours of pre-training completed! I decided to make it official and do an Anusara teacher training from there.

What were you doing before you taught yoga?

  • Traveling, writing freelance, and doing anything I could to make ends meet.

How has your yoga practice changed since you began?

  • My life has changed drastoically. My practice, not so much. Sure, the poses evolve and change with time, but the purpose of the practice has always remained to return to the truth that is always there.

Is there a particular aspect of yoga you are especially intrigued with right now?

  • Right now, through the upheaval happening in the universe, I am focused on deep breathwork and meditation.

What else have you studied in depth?

  • The history of yoga, yoga philosophy, and alignment.

What are some of your other practices or passions?

  • I play music in a band, and I love horses.

When you really need grounding what do you do?

  • Go to the ocean.

Anything else you'd like to share?

  • I am so grateful to the Mandala community for being an ever-present source of strength and love.
