Instructor Interviews

With Leah Kinney

How were you first introduced to yoga?

My very first yoga class was at my mother's friend's house when I was 18 or 19.  She taught the class on her back deck and I don't remember liking it very much.  A year later I began taking yoga classes at college.  This time it stuck.  I loved it.

What made you decide to move beyond being a student to become a teacher?

I honestly don't know.  It was a very difficult transition for me to make. Even now I am much more comfortable being a student.

What were you doing before you taught yoga?

Not a whole lot! I was floundering in that nebulous place after college but before any sort of career.  Perhaps that is why I started teaching....I needed a job!

How has your yoga practice changed since you began?

My practice has seen me through early adulthood to middle age. While practicing has remained consistent, what I practice changes all the time.

Is there a particular aspect of yoga you are especially intrigued with right now?

Yes, simply doing it. Also props.  I love using props to change my perspective on shapes that I think I know well.

What else have you studied in depth?

I have many shallow wells and high standards for what I consider in depth study.  I'll answer again in another 10 years!

What are some of your other practices or passions?

Time alone.  I need a lot of it.   Walking. As much as I can.  Crocheting.  I've made a whole lot of hats lately!  Playing, reading, talking, cooking, just being with my kids and my niece and nephew.

When you really need grounding what do you do?

Move my body.
